Crop Insurance Deadlines Farmers Should Never Miss

Farming comes with a lot of moving parts, and crop insurance deadlines are some of the most important dates on the calendar. Missing a deadline can mean missing important coverage options for the entire season.

At KDL Insurance LLC in Slayton, we spend a lot of time helping farmers stay ahead of these deadlines so there are no surprises when planting season arrives. Below are a few of the key crop insurance dates Minnesota farmers should keep in mind each year.

March 15

Sales Closing Date (or the Monday after)

For most crops, March 15 is the big one.

After this date, coverage is generally locked in for the year.

If you’re thinking about making changes to your policy, this is the time to sit down and talk through your options.

This is the last day to:

  • Purchase crop insurance for the season
  • Make changes to existing policies
  • Adjust coverage levels
  • Add or remove options such as Supplemental Coverage Option (SCO) or other endorsements
April – May

Acreage Reporting Preparation

Once planting begins, it’s important to keep good records of what goes into each field.

Having accurate records during planting season makes the reporting process much smoother later in the summer.

Your acreage report will eventually include details such as:

  • Crop type
  • Acres planted
  • Planting dates
  • Field locations
July 15

Acreage Reporting Deadline

For most spring-planted crops in Minnesota, July 15 is the Acreage Reporting Deadline.

By this date, producers must report all planted acres to their crop insurance agent. This report confirms what was planted and where, and it becomes the basis for your insurance coverage for the season.

Missing this deadline can affect eligibility for claims later on, so it’s an important one.

Harvest Time

Production Reporting

After harvest, production information must be reported so your Actual Production History (APH) records stay up to date.

These numbers help determine your future coverage levels and are important for maintaining accurate insurance records year after year.

The Best Deadline Is the One You Plan Ahead For

Every farm operation is different. Coverage decisions can depend on many factors, including crop mix, marketing plans, and risk tolerance. That’s why we always encourage farmers to sit down and talk through their options before deadlines arrive.

At KDL Insurance LLC, we combine real farm experience with crop insurance knowledge to help producers make informed decisions that protect their operation.

If you’d like to review your coverage or talk about options for the upcoming season, we’d be happy to visit with you. Give us a call or stop by the office in Slayton anytime.
